In 12-TET, you don’t define your intervals by tidy ratios of whole numbers. Instead, you divide up the octave into twelve equally-sized semitones (the interval between two adjacent piano keys or guitar frets). You then add semitones together to make all the other intervals. To go up a semitone from any note, you multiply its frequency by the 12th root of two. To go down a semitone from any note, you divide its frequency by the 12th root of two. If you go up by an octave (12 semitones), you’re multiplying your frequency by the 12th root of two 12 times, which works out to two.

I love La Havas because she plays intricate yet simple guitar parts that have helped me become a better player. Her music spans genres and shows how diverse music is nowadays — she’s a gorgeous mixture of neo-soul, rock, jazz, pop, and soul, wrapped into one.

Speaking of Top “40,” that’s literally what this year’s list totaled (all by itself this time!). Yep, there were 40 songs “Boo’d Up” in the Billboard’s Top 5 in 2018. Exactly 40 — how clean is that?

The tone that differentiates the Dorian mode from the standard minor (Aeolian) scale is its major 6th. To create a venerable Dorian sound, we’ll need to exploit the presence of that major 6th, and its contrast with the minor 3rd.

All of our mentored online courses come with six weeks of one-on-one professional coaching and feedback on your work. It’s like having a personal trainer, but for music! Whether you’re interested in a topic covered by one of our courses, like Orchestration for Strings, Introduction to the Composer’s Craft, or The Creative Power of Advanced Harmony, or just to work with a Mentor directly to achieve a specific goal, we can help you get there.

The second course in the Faders Up series, Advanced Mix Techniques is structured quite differently from the first. Here, you’ll gain insights from renowned sound engineers, but it’ll be much more tightly focused, both on their personal sound-crafting techniques and the tried-and-true techniques that pertain to specific genres (hip-hop, rock, metal, pop, and cinematic orchestral). We even threw in an entire section on the basics of mastering as an added bonus.

A common distortion pedal for shoegaze is the fuzz, and there’s almost none more famous than the Big Muff Pi. It’s famous for a reason. It creates a high quality, juicy, fat sounding distortion for a comparatively low price and is sought after for its sustain as well. The Big Muff is really quite perfect for creating those colorful walls of noise, but there’s such a huge range of overdrive and distortion pedals out there, you really need to find what fits your personal taste.

Okay, to really get your head around phase, we need to move beyond the on/off perspective we just outlined. Phase is quite literally a relationship of degrees. In other words, our “out of phase” sine wave has a 180° phase relationship to its mirrored counterpart. Were we to gently move our duplicate sine wave through all degree positions in the phase relationship, we’d encounter different degrees of cancellation, and therefore different degrees of amplification and attenuation — from silence to peak volume and everything in between.

Perfection is objective, and the process of growing and learning is what makes life so beautiful. The world would be so boring if we didn’t need to grow, learn, or change. Don’t be afraid to make some mistakes sometimes.
