With overwhelmingly positive results, we’re happy to share a few select testimonials of Soundfly’s Modern Mix Techniques course directly from our students.
Another key metric you can measure is your follower growth over time. This is important because when listeners follow you, your new releases will automatically show up in their personalized Release Radar playlist. They’ll also get email notifications about shows you’re playing in their city.
Bands who play on proper venue stages are removed and distanced from their audience. The band-to-fan connections artists constantly seek to forge in live performance are made much easier and more frequently in the setting of a living room or back porch. You’ll also have a better chance at making friends with members of the audience and other performing musicians, because after your set, there will literally be nowhere to hide — unless you awkwardly pack up your things and leave the house without making eye contact or saying a word to anyone. I don’t recommend doing that.

“Rockstar”: It’s hard to say how many chords this song really has. The way I hear it, it’s a C minor thing in the intro, and then you’re just swimming in a G minor and E♭ fish tank for the rest of the song. So that’s either a modulation from C minor to G minor, or you just start on the iv chord which was quickly dispatched by ninjas — take your pick. Watch how the phrase leading up to the first chorus stretches it to nine bars, rather than your regular eight, and how the outro has an irregular number of bars, too. What’s cool about this is how it obfuscates where the different sections begin or end.
As soon as I started to scope it out, I very quickly realized that it would be even better if I could build a tool that would allow my clients to create their own playlists — let them be in charge of their music journey.
For many, this is the dream. But not for me. My eyes become misty when I think of my teenage PC’s dial-up modem croaking into life, a low-quality MP3 of “Guerilla Radio” or “Ms. Jackson” seeping onto my hard drive through the unregulated glory of vintage peer-to-peer technology. Long Live Limewire!
“Happier”: Wait, no… what are you… no! Not the dog, come on, man, not the dog, what are you doing to me, Marshmello? Okay, so here’s a form I’m not adequately equipped to categorize or compare to anything else: what’s stumping me is what to do with the three-bar space in between the pre-chorus and the solid chorus/refrain that’s introduced at the beginning. For now, I’m lumping it in with the chorus as part of a chorus variation. But you could also think of it as an extended part of the pre-chorus, especially as its lyric is taken from it. Or, I guess we could even call it an “interlude.” It’s slippery. I have to highlight the half-bridge that ends the song — you almost never see half-bridges.

It has gone down in history as one of the most epic Super Bowl performances ever, and these halftime shows are already pretty epic in and of themselves. In 40 years, it had never rained at a Super Bowl, and Prince really brought the party with four absolutely perfect songs for the occasion, and, of course, the one. “Purple Rain” is later in the video, but the whole thing is a good watch.

Over the past few hundred years, Western Europeans gradually figured out an alternative system to harmonics-based tuning, called 12-tone equal temperament (12-TET for short). It’s the system that the entire Western world uses today. The idea behind 12-TET is to have everything be pretty much in tune, which you accomplish by having everything be a little bit out of tune. Is this a worthwhile compromise? Let’s do the math and find out.
For this course, you really just need to know enough about mixing that you know you need to learn more. If you’ve ever struggled to communicate with a mix engineer in order to get the sound you’re looking for, or listened to your own tracks and been unable to pinpoint exactly what you need to do to improve your sound, this is the course for you.
So far, we’ve kept to pretty mainstream pop tunes, but when we start to move away from those, things can get murky pretty quickly. For instance, while verses and choruses might be easy to recognize in a big pop anthem, how they function in an electronic dance song might not be as clear. Or how would you describe the form of something like “A Day in the Life” by The Beatles? It’s basically two entirely separate songs smashed together, so there’s no obvious “verse” or “chorus” section. Same thing with Travis Scott’s “Sicko Mode,” but for three songs’ worth!
